In a suspected suicide, a soldier who was being investigated for multiple fraud charges, who had been detained and kept in close custody in a guard room, was discovered hanging.
According to a report to the regiment, the soldier from the 48 Engineer Regiment was detained on Wednesday, October 11, 2023, at around 7:30 pm for scamming a defense civilian employee.
Brigadier General E. Aggrey-Quashie, the Director General of Public Relations in the Ghana Armed Forces, signed and released the statement on Friday (Oct. 13, 2023).
"Preliminary investigative report indicates that the soldier who was under investigations for several cases of fraud, was placed in close custody on Wednesday 11 October 2023 at about 1930 hours on a report to the Regiment for defrauding a Defence Civilian Staff," the statement read.
"A team from the Ghana Military Police and a CID personnel from Teshie Divisional Police Headquarters were dispatched to the scene for investigations," it stated.
Since then, the deceased soldier's body has been sent to the mortuary at the 37 Military Hospital.
The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) released a statement signed and issued by Brigadier General E. Aggrey Quashie, the Director General of Public Relations, expressing its sympathies to the bereaved family, colleagues, friends, and loved ones of the departed soldier.
